Antonine Wall - Rough Castle (HES)

This is the best preserved section of the wall that, for about 20 years from 140 AD, divided the Roman south from the tribal north. The remains of a fort and two signalling platforms can also be seen here.

The best-preserved length of rampart and ditch, together with the earthworks of a fort and a short length of military way with quarry pits. This is the best site to gain an impression of how the frontier and its integral forts worked.
