One of the oldest and finest inhabited castles in Scotland with grand State Rooms, extensive collections and an Historic Toy Museum.
Thirlestane's origins are in the 13th Century but the Castle has been rebuilt and extended over the generations. The 17th-century ceilings in the State rooms are amongst the finest in Europe and there is one of the most extensive family portrait collections in the country. Make your way around the castle learning about the key role the castle and the Maitland family have played in Scottish history across the centuries. Our new Historic Toy Museum is now open in the former Schoolroom.
